Mechanical insulation

Saving energy, saving lives, saving money

Members of Local 118 install insulation to improve energy efficiency, allow comfort control and ensure protective barriers
against fire and water damage and mould.

Saving energy—
Concern about the environment, reducing our carbon footprints and using less energy are at the core of the mechanical
insulating trade and have been from the beginning. Proper mechanical insulation can cut energy usage by 50% and reduce
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. We support building owners and contractors who are working to achieve LEED
environmental standards. The men and women of the Insulators Local 118 have the training, expertise and commitment to
meet the rigorous energy and environmental standards set by LEED and public agencies.

Saving lives—
The Leaky Condo crisis that first arose in B.C. in the 1980s educated everyone about the dangers of mould. Condensation
on improperly insulated pipes and ducts provides the moist environment in which mould grows. Professional insulation
technicians can solve the problem before it starts. Every modern building is designed as a series of fireproof compartments.
However, when walls are refitted for pipes, ducts or cables, insulation technicians must install firestop systems that comply
with national flame and temperature ratings. The members of Local 118, in unison with professional firestop contractors, are the best in their field. The certified professionals of Local 118 also have the most experience and training to safely handle all asbestos removal needs.

Saving money—
Heating and cooling rates are increasing. Reducing energy also means reducing costs. Mechanical insulation of hot and
cold water pipes and ventilation units should be a priority. Initial investment in proper mechanical insulation will start saving
money in just 5 years. Energy seeping out costs consumers and taxpayers billions of dollars across the country. The cost to
future generations is much higher. Using less energy means generating less carbon dioxide and a better future for our planet.
